The Original Summer Palace - designed by a Jesuit

We then visited the original Summer Palace that had been designed by a Jesuit. The Jesuits were a strong Christian presence in China - one even was an emperor's astronomer. I believe this site was destroyed - like so many others - during the Cultural Revolution.

The umbrellas/parasols that you see are people using as they walk -- the maze that still exists in good condition. An interesting note about Chinese women - they have beautiful skin! They avoid the sun and use umbrellas as protection if they need to be in the sun. Given my pasty, white, Irish skin - I followed their example. When I told my students that Americans lay in the sun to get tan - some were horrified while others thought I was joking!
